Chapter 01 — The Operator

Eric Hour, Fractional COO.

A decade inside the P&Ls of Amazon and Jet.com before the consulting card. Now embedded inside the leadership teams of Series A–C companies — building the operational infrastructure that turns growth-stage momentum into durable, investor-grade operations.

The Origin

A decade inside the P&L before the consulting card.

Eric Hour began his operating career in the fulfilment networks and merchant systems of Amazon, then carried that discipline into Jet.com during the company's pre-IPO build-out. He spent ten years sitting inside the P&L of companies that treated operational excellence as a competitive weapon — not a back-office cost. By the time he founded Eric Hour Consulting LLC in 2014, he had already lived through the messy middle of growth: the renegotiated vendor contracts, the warehouse throughput crises, the org-chart rewrites that decided whether a quarter survived.

The firm began as a single-page engagement and grew into a bench of senior operators because the work demanded it. Every client that renewed asked for the same thing: not a slide deck, but a second-in-command who could sit in the leadership meeting on Monday and rewrite the forecast model by Wednesday. That posture — embedded, accountable, measured in shipped outcomes — has anchored the practice ever since.

What the firm does not do matters as much as what it does. Eric Hour does not sell strategy retreats, board-deck makeovers, or "transformation roadmaps" that never reach a vendor. The work is operational: rev rec, gross margin, fulfilment cost, headcount productivity, weekly cash discipline. If a metric does not move in the first 14 business days, the engagement has not started.

Today, the firm is deliberately small. Seven senior operators. Three fractional analysts. A partner network across four cities. The constraint is not demand — it is the supply of operators Eric trusts to sit inside a founder's leadership team and own the outcome. Every engagement is staffed by people who have already done the job at companies the buyer has heard of, and the brief is always the same: act like a COO, measure like an auditor, leave the company stronger than you found it.

Credentials & Exits

Credentials, exits, and the tools behind the work.

A sophisticated buyer scans the About page for proof before booking a call. Here is what an operator audit would actually check — academic pedigree, active certifications, the operating exits, and the proprietary instruments the firm brings to every engagement.

01

Kellogg MBA, active Fractional Executive certification.

MBA from the Kellogg School of Management. Active Fractional Executive credential from the Fractional Executives Alliance — the operating standard the firm holds itself to on every engagement.

02

Three Nasdaq-listed operating exits.

Built and scaled the operations functions for three companies now listed on Nasdaq: GH, CART, and PAYO. These are not advisory logos — Eric sat inside the leadership team during the scaling that took each company public.

03

The 47-point Operational Maturity Diagnostic.

A proprietary instrument used as the onboarding baseline for every engagement. 2,400+ operators have completed it; the same instrument sets the engagement scope, the first-90-day targets, and the renewal conversation.

The Bench

7 senior operators, 3 analysts, 4 cities.

An Eric Hour engagement is staffed, not solo-consulted. Every client gets a senior operator as the day-to-day lead, a fractional analyst for the modelling work, and access to the partner network for cross-border operating questions.

The four-city footprint lets the firm serve North American and EU clients in the same operating week, without the timezone tax that quietly destroys a remote engagement.

Field Note

What an embedded engagement looks like.

Composite vignette — illustrative, not a verified endorsement.

"Day one, the founder handed Eric the P&L and a stack of vendor contracts. By day nine, the rev-rec model had been rebuilt, two fulfilment vendors had been re-quoted, and the weekly cash forecast — which had been a guess — was a working instrument. The engagement was not a strategy project. It was a second operator in the building, with the same accountability as a full-time hire and none of the recruiting risk."

— Composite client profile: Series B SaaS founder, $22M ARR, mid-2025 engagement.

Eric Hour engagements are intentionally not transformational theatre. The work shows up in the weekly KPI movement, not in a deliverable deck.
